Documentary Traineeship – Grierson DocLab

Grierson DocLab: New Entrants is a training programme that helps UK-based new entrants aged 18-25 thrive in the world of factual TV and documentary filmmaking. It has been running since 2012 and coupled with our specialist training programmes supported by Netflix and Prime Video Pathway, has seen over 200 trainees go through the programme.

The initiative takes place over approximately one year and aims to equip up to 12 successful trainees with the skills, knowledge, confidence and connections to pursue a career in the UK factual TV industry.

The Charles Parker Prize 2025 for Best Student Audio Feature

The Charles Parker Awards – named in honour of one of radio’s greatest documentary pioneers – have established an unparalleled reputation for excellence in radio and audio feature production by young people, and many of our winners have gone on to carve out successful professional careers in radio and audio production.  The 2024 winning features were commissioned by the BBC through the independent radio production company Soundscape Productions, co-ordinators of the Charles Parker Prize since 2010.

The Trust is delighted to announce that in 2025 BBC Radio 4 will again be broadcasting the Charles Parker Prize winning features in their New Storytellers strand during the summer.

The competition will be open for audio features (produced between 13th February 2024 and 10th February 2025) made by any student (or recently graduated student) in Further or Higher Education in the UK, and also by those who have attended an accredited media training course.  The competition opened on Monday 25 November 2024 and the final deadline has been extended to Monday 31 March 2025.   

A shortlist of features will be announced at the end of April. Nominees will be invited to the award ceremony, which will take place as the core of the Annual Charles Parker Day at Goldsmiths College, University of London on Friday 16 May 2025.

2025 Emerging Talent Competition – Glastonbury Festival

This competition gives new UK and Ireland-based acts of any musical genre the chance to compete for a slot on one of the main stages at this year’s Festival.

The winners of the free-to-enter competition will also be awarded a £5,000 Talent Development prize from PRS Foundation to help take their songwriting and performing to the next level. Two runners-up will also each be awarded a £2,500 PRS Foundation Talent Development prize.

Acts from any musical genre can enter the 2025 competition FOR ONE WEEK ONLY using the form below from 9am Monday 27th January until 5pm Monday 3rd February 2025. 

To enter, acts needed to supply a YouTube link to one original song, plus a link to a video of themselves performing live.

The Grey Area is a monthly event for trans and queer writers and book lovers. Events will take place in person, in the Office Arté Util space at the Whitworth.

This is a new trans and queer writing group and book club in Manchester. The Grey Area is based in the Whitworth and we run from 6pm to 8.30pm.The idea is for writers and book lovers to get the chance to meet, share work and find like-minded people.

The Grey Area events are held on the first Thursday of the Month. These events are very collaborative and Grey will ask you what your expectations are of the session, encourage feedback and keep the group welcoming to newcomers who may join in later months.

Music Drop – Contact Theatre

Music Drop is Contact’s open access music service designed to empower the next generation of musicians.

Contact’s state of the art Media Lounge is equipped with iMacs with Logic Pro and Ableton Live, synthesizers, guitars, basses, pianos, electronic drums, drum machines and a vocal booth.

These facilities along with their friendly, knowledgeable music facilitators can help you achieve your creative ambitions – be that learning song-writing, production and recording skills or learning a new instrument.

Music Drop sessions are supported by industry professionals and experienced music facilitators. These facilitators will be rotating every few months, giving participants the opportunity to work with a range of artists and a variety of different music styles.

Scratch Open Call – Mirage Bar

You bring the weird and wonderful, they’ll bring the people. Scratch is a chance for creatives to test their performance based work for an audience. 

Last Thursday Scratch Nights at Mirage Bar offer a monthly dedicated space for live artists and performers to test out new and developing ideas. They are a chance for creatives to show their stuff in front of a live and supportive audience, with a social afterwards to network and receive feedback!

This series of events will be informal, for creatives to test ideas in real time, experiment, take risks and share new work with peers and the public. 

Creatives who are in the early stages of developing performance based work are invited to submit proposals for a Scratch Night, in performance mediums including but not limited to spoken word, film, sound, multi-disciplinary, durational or time-based work, digital work, pop-up performance, installation-based work and interventions. 

This is an open call for artists based anywhere in the North West to apply (Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Cumbria and Lancashire) 

Three proposals will be selected per event. Mirage Bar are able to support performances of up to 20 minutes and durational works will also be considered. Your proposal should be for a new idea or a work in progress piece. 

Performers will receive: 

– A fee of £100 to perform 

– Rehearsal space at Mirage Bar 

– Some technical and producing support where needed

– Production images and video taken by a professional photographer 

– Anonymous feedback from audiences through a digital form

– A number of free tickets to the event for your chosen VIPs

Guidelines: 

– This opportunity is for artists at any stage of their career.

– The work must be a new idea or piece development with basic technical requirements. 

– The work should be performative or include some live element, and either be performed within a 20 minute timeframe or be a longer durational piece.  

– The work must be suitable for Mirage Bar. 

Mirage Bar is a fully wheelchair accessible venue via a permanent ramp and has an accessible indoor toilet.

This is an opportunity with a rolling deadline, with events taking place every last Thursday of the month from 30th May 2024 – 24th April 2025. In completing this form you are registering your interest to perform at one of these events, and you will be asked which dates you would be available to perform should you be successful.

Raise The Bar Mcr – Open Mic (Rappers/Producers)

Raise The Bar MCR is the number one open mic event in Manchester, exclusively for rappers. They want to take rap back to its roots by building up the community and showcasing Manchester’s rap talent at all stages of their journey.

On the last Wednesday of every month at the Old Abbey Taphouse, 8 upcoming artists have 9 minutes to show Manny what they’ve got and have the chance to win a paid champion set at the next event. The champion set is voted for by 10 audience judges who want to see you come back and perform a 20-minute set.

Raise The Bar also host a Mancunian headliner who is making a name for themselves in the scene for 30 minutes after all the acts.

But the night doesn’t end there! At 10pm Manchester’s best cypher. Whether you have never performed in front of a crowd before or you just want to come down to pick up the mic and spray, you are welcome. Beats for the cypher are sent in by some of the coldest producers in Manchester and a Mancunian DJ will keep the vibes.

Kids of Colour Boys & Love is a new project for boys* of colour in Greater Manchester dedicated to love and self-discovery, whilst amplifying the voices and shared experiences of our communities.

The project will delve into a wide range of themes including; self-love, solidarity, intersectionality, challenging toxic masculinity, advocating for feminism, celebrating cultural identity, love of community and planet.

Don’t worry if you don’t feel comfortable with these ideas and terms yet, we will be exploring them together!
