BEHIND THE SCENES: RADIO COURSE

The first Radio Course of 2022 took place this month, returning back and better than ever before. This two-week programme funded by MAES helps young people pursue a career in digital broadcasting.

Welcoming participants into the studios, the group delved into what it means to be in a working Radio Production environment. Thanks to the amazing facilitators Alex, Jacob and Naomi, a wonderfully organic energy developed in the group as those involved learnt the ropes of digital media.

Cameron, one participant who has dabbled in digital broadcasting before, adds his thoughts on the group.

“We’ve been really lucky with the group, everyone’s really creative & people have their own sets of skills. It’s all just come together really organically and we’ve all just got on from day one”

During week one of the project, the group really got to know one another, through various games and team building exercises. One individual, Ewan, comments on how he felt coming into the project.

“It can be quite awkward coming into something like this and nobody really wants to share or open up, but this felt really easy, playing a lot of games has been a really important part as it gets everyone out of their shells a little bit”

With the end goal of working collaboratively towards a live radio show that would air on Reform, the group explored both Presenter and Producer roles, establishing who was the next (add famous UK presenters name) amongst them. They experimented with script writing, public speaking and acquired skills in music software, preparing for the big week ahead.

During week two, the facilitators invited a variety of guest speakers and industry professionals into the space to get the participants geared up on the hottest radio knowledge. With sessions dedicated to Social Media and Podcasting, as well as DJ sessions, the group learnt all the different segments that make up a radio show.

With scripting way undergo, Ewan comments on the relaxed atmosphere enabling them to come ‘to very natural progression about what we want to do with the show’. After some thought, the collective decision was made to write a show dedicated to all the senses, naming themselves Senses of Self. With participants having a variety of different skillsets and broadcasting backgrounds, segments such as comedy sketches, a game show, meditation and many more pieces of incredible original content were developed.

Young people such as Cameron, who had previous presenting experience, speaks on the process.

I’ve done some presenting for silly comedy podcasts. It was a long time ago, so I’m still kind of starting afresh with it. It’s been really nice to learn how to put together a show and kind of get the ideas for it. It’s been a really useful process”

Whilst, Sophie-Mia, another individual with previous radio experience who did the radio for Manchester Metropolitan University, discusses her role in the show.

“Our radio show is based on senses, so at the very very end of the hour I’m going to do some mindfulness to bring it back round and centre for everybody, and make them aware of where they are, so we are going to end on quite a calm note”

Not only did the participants get savvy with the scripting, but one young person, Lewis, designed a trio of artwork, spotlighting the different segments they had come up with. To view the talented artwork that was designed for the show, please scroll down below.

ON OUR RADAR

Welcome back to the second edition of On Our Radar, a brand-new music feature where the team at Reform select their hottest tracks of the week. We can’t wait to share with you guys what we have been listening to…

KIEFER

We don’t know about you guys, but we are absolutely LOVING the sunshine! This top rework of the Roy Ayers classic, this time round by Kiefer, is the perfect combination of Jazzy and Soulful. A great tune to whack on in this gorgeous Spring weather we have been blessed with. Featured on the EP Between Days, the Youtube Video you see above is animated by Mason London and the song is mastered by Mathewdavid. What are you waiting for? Get listening!

SCHUTTLE

You all know how much we are a fan of finding Manchester based musicians and labels. This slow paced Electro track was released on Manchester Label and Events co-ordinators Bakk Heia. As for the tune, now that’s all down to Johnny Phethean, otherwise known as Schuttle. Johnny’s alias is intricate, with his sound described as being “as much built for the dance floor as it is shaped for the introspective listener”.

WERKHA

Werkha’s new track has got us feeling all nostalgic. Some nice Reform synergy here, Werkha was introduced to Jason Edmunds who animated the video for our Co-Lab Theory back in 2019.

‘Move Different’, featuring vocals from Ellen Beth Abdi, Double Bass from Nick Blacka and Horns from Aaron Wood, is a medley of Jazz and Funk to get your ears tingling.

MAXINE SCOTT

Rising singer and songwriter Maxine Scott has just been signed to Ramrock Blue Records, releasing her EP Erykah U Bad. Previously voted for BBC Radio Kent’s ‘Fresh Find’ awards back in 2021, Maxine is redefining what we know today as R&B, Pop, Soul and Jazz… We can’t wait to see what else she has in stock this year!

JAZZ DANCE FUSION VOL.3

Presented by Colin Curtis, this new volume released on the legendary ZR Records is a whopping twenty-six tracks in total. Celebrating a string of genres by fusing together the sounds across the globe, such as Brazil, UK, Japan, Europe and Cuba. Not only is it a recognition of the different flavours from around the world, but it was composed during the pandemic, to add some enjoyment back into our lives. Call it music therapy if you like, this one’s good for the mind, body and soul.

MARCELA DIAS SINDACO

Lose yourself in the sounds of Brazilian musician Marcela Dias Sindaco. With her soft Portuguese vocals gliding the way, a feel-good good melody is determined in the form of crunchy Electro. After leaving Rio de Janeiro to travel around Europe and finding clubs in cities like Berlin and Paris, her sound became a fusion of South American zest and European stompers. And, we are loving the artwork by Callin Mackintosh, a freelance Graphic Designer from London.

BREAKAGE

You can just imagine the scenes when this one gets dropped in the club, that growling sub bass and snipper sharp drum pattern with teasing crushed elements does everything it needs to cause an absolute riot.

BEHIND THE SCENES: TAMESIDE FUTURES

Our latest podcasting project, delivered in partnership with the Prince’s Trust and Tameside council, kickstarted in Tameside last week at the 4C Community Centre.

To start things off the young people were invited into the space for a two week podcasting bootcamp. During these two weeks, participants were introduced to scripting, editing and producing a podcast with a view to scripting their own interview based recording. This time running, they were joined by two different employers for all their interviewing desires; Visual Architects who are an events decor company and 0730 Media, a videography and photography company run by husband and wife power duo.

One half of the group went to the Visual Architects warehouse, where they work on building set designs and event decor. After a well rounded tour, the young people were asked if they wanted to turn on a pretty savvy piece of kit: a giant robot (we’re just as intrigued as you are). The other group came down to Reform to record an exclusive interview of one half of the 0730 Media team, Simon

After an enjoyable two weeks, close bonds and friendships were made within the group, and people went home feeling like they had made friends for life. Not only were friendships developed between the participants, but with the facilitators too. Our lovely, fully trained facilitators were noticed by young person Luke as ‘very friendly and funny’.

Another young person, Sam, speaks on their experience with Tameside Futures: “The experience has been great because I’ve overcome my anxiety and it’s built up my confidence as well, so for that I just want to say thank you because I’ve been pushed and that’s what I needed”.

Another individual, Alex, comments on his personal growth during the project: “I have learnt that I can be confident if I put my mind to it”.

With confidence on the horizon, the group worked towards a live radio show – It’s About Drive, It’s About Podcast Ducky’s – showcasing all the exciting stuff they had been doing.

“Over the past two weeks we’ve been sharing our thoughts and feelings on the topic of Media and Technology. We developed podcasting and scripting skills and had the opportunity to visit and talk to creative companies within Tameside. This was an inspiring experience that gave us insight into how art and media companies operate”

To hear the full show that aired on Friday the 18th of March, click down below.

But, the fun doesn’t stop there. The following four weeks are dedicated to helping the individuals involved find their next employment steps, by sharing job opportunities that arise and helping them into full time employment.

Watch the video down below to see what went down.

The Get Up – Reform’s Very First Daily Morning Show

We are so excited to announce the launch of our first ever morning show, The Get Up, which will broadcast from Monday 28th of March 2022.

Live from 10 – 12pm every weekday morning, ‘The Get Up’, hosted by Yelena Lashimba, offers a daily dose of positivity, designed to gently ease you into the day with an uplifting mix of music and chat. There will also be healthy points of discussion from across the community, with audiences invited to get involved in the conversation via Reform Radio’s online chat box. Director Sam Oliveira, spoke of his excitement for the upcoming launch.

“This will be the first time in over eight years of broadcasting that we’ve had a daily morning show on Reform Radio. Our ambition is to make this a touch point for our community to interact with the station and learn more about the wider activity of the organisation. Yelena’s energy and passion makes her the perfect person to do this and we can’t wait for her to start”

Host Yelena Lashimba is a musician from Manchester, who first got involved with Reform Radio via our artist development programme Soundcamp. This has led to Yelena performing at a host of festivals, including the Soundcamp Showcase for Reform Radio’s virtual stage at We Out Here Festival and Manchester International Festival. Her original song ‘Toxic’ was released on Reform’s sister record label Rhythm Lab Records.

One of our main goals has always been to help young people on their journey to success and helping them into the industry they aspire to work in. Young artists and budding presenters such as Yelena, seized this great opportunity, commenting on her ambitions for the show;

“I am really excited to create a positive, fun and friendly space for people to engage with all kinds of discussion points as well as to just listen to good music. I am also looking forward to hearing other people’s opinions and opening my perspective up to the room”

Not only will the show provide daily food-for-thought, it will have a special focus on spotlighting up-and-coming talent from across the UK by working with the likes of national charity Youth Music. Other features will include In The Shadows, which explores behind the scenes roles in the music industry and routes into them.

Packed full of guest mixes, interviews and special guests, you can listen to the show every weekday morning via our website and interact directly with Yelena via the chat box. We hope you love it as much as we do!

ON OUR RADAR

Introducing On Our Radar, a brand-new music feature where the team at Reform select their hottest tracks of the week. We can’t wait to share with you guys what we have been listening to…

UNTITLED, DJ TANAKA

Image yourself lying on a beach, warm sun rays hitting your near golding skin, shades on; world off. A perfect warm up for a night out, this track released on Fada Records is the perfect sunset anthem. The melodic fluctuations create an alluring yet passive lead, gently sweeping you into sweet serenity.

Fada Records is an independent label founded in 2018 and based in Los Angeles, CA and Marseille, France. The artist, DJ Tanaka, is from Japan and grew up in the Northern Kyoto Prefecture. Now based in the capital, Tokyo, he draws much of his inspiration from his upbringing of going fishing with his uncle and playing games of Tekken 2 (a fighting game from the 90s) with his neighbours. This particular track encapsulates the transition from suburban to city life and the discovery of night life and feelings of lust in Tokyo.

OTIS RECORDS

Released back in 2020 by Australian label OTIS Records, this atmospheric track is one of the only songs available on their platform – and we think it’s a hidden gem!

Bringing back the sounds of early 2000s Drum & Bass, this liquid tune is rich in layering, with epic female vocal samples scattered throughout.

MATTHEW HALSALL

Salute to the sun, indeed. This Manchester based Jazz artist and label-founder creates effortless medleys of soft, soothing and soulful instrumentals. Harmony with Nature, performed live at Hallé St Peter’s in the heart of Ancoats, is the perfect accompaniment for the morning get up. With bouncy percussion, beautiful brass taking the lead and rich compounds of both warming and invigorating tones – Halsall’s style is utterly unique and compelling. Catch him playing at YES in both March and April to see the real shebang in person.

BLIND MIC FT TYLER DALEY & SVMI

We are loving this link up from three Manchester based artists, Blind Mic, Tyler Daley and SVMI. The combination of softly sung vocals against Northern rappers runs smoothly throughout, with an instrumental giving off Tom Misch vibes. Plus, we are loving the line ‘I’m not tryna please no one’.

THE MIRROR BALL TEST

The Mirror Ball Test are a seven piece Jazz-fusion from Manchester, playing wonderfully ambient and sophisticated instrumentals. This self-titled song is four and a half minutes of classical enjoyment, slowly intensifying throughout by means of intricate layering. We are loving the brass & woodwind dazzle on this one.

HIDDEN SPHERES

Let’s us introduce you to the Manchester based DJ & Producer, Hidden Spheres. This track ‘improvisation’ was released on Rhythm Section International, a label that grew out of Peckham in South London. From the get go, the track has the ability to hook you in. Beginning with tribal percussion, tropical samples and silky reverberated female vocals saying ‘improvisation’; by the time the choppy electro-pop chords kick in and the Acid House sounds take reign, this summer track has taken over our mind, body and soul.

THE REYTONS

The Reytons are an ensemble from South Yorkshire, delivering energetic indie-rock. After performing at open mic nights in 2017, the group got together and made their first EP that was released on the Manchester based label Scruff of The Neck. Their song On The Back Burner is very comparable to the style of the Arctic Monkeys. The lyrics are humorous throughout, with the band even cracking jokes about their famous predecessors lead singer: ‘everybody round here’s got a cousin or mate that’s best friends with Alex Turner’.

JUST BANCO

Just Banco is an artist from Manchester, bringing something smooth and fresh to the table. The music video for his track Monica was posted on GRM Daily, a music news platform spotlighting the very best in UK Rap, Drill, Grime and more. Banco’s style is unique, fusing together elements of R&B, Rap and Trap to create his own compositions.

FRONT BENCH

Meet Front Bench, a DJ & Producer based in Leeds. Released on his co-founding label 199, Novocaine is part of a 10 track album, Comme Des Garçons. An ethereal track, combining elements of ambience against Garage driven beats. The dreamlike nature of the piece is constructed through delicate piano chords, use of strings and angelic vocal samples.

Front Bench admits that this album was written ‘in two lonely lockdown weeks’ and is a reflection on what had been a ‘challenging and formative period’ of his life.

TOGETHER FOR UKRAINE

Together For Ukraine is a collection of tracks by sixty-five Ukrainian and International artists. Set up by Standard Deviations, a newly formed label, and Ukrainian label Mystictrax, all profits will be going to charities that are helping to support the people of Ukraine. For more information on this, please see their Bandcamp profile.

Reform Radio to collaborate with shesaid.so South Africa on a new music project

Thanks to funding from The British Council, as one of their Internatonal Collaboration Grants, Reform Radio and shesaid.so South Africa have developed a sixth month Music Production and Online Radio training programme with producer and label owner Rose Bonica. The hope is to uplift women and LGBTQIA+ producers and musicians from underserved communities in the Western Cape of South Africa.

shesaid.so South Africa aims to unite women, LGBTQIA+ and gender non-conforming individuals in the creative industries. They ‘endeavour to nurture a future that is not only a diverse and equal [one], but also equitable for women and LGBTQIA+ music industry professionals’, commenting that all their ‘efforts and energy are best invested in creating opportunities that are conventionally not readily available in our community’. Working to empower their members and equip them with the knowledge and resources they may need, this program will allow shesaid.so ‘to discover, educate and amplify talented artists and illustrate to them that their current circumstances do not have to define their future.’

During the process, four of the most promising new artists will be selected to take part in the next iteration of Reform Radio’s Remote Rhythm Lab project.

This concept is a product of our very own sister label Rhythm Lab Records. As an independent record label with a team of upcoming young professionals, they work to foster collaborations between artists in the North West and support them in their development. Their legacy ‘is to continue to support unique and different collaborations’.

DJ, Producer & Record Label Owner, Rose Bonica overlooking the ocean in South Africa

Rhythm Lab explores collaboration between various artists. Back in 2020, we teamed up with  Jägermeister and Arts Council to put a spin on the original Rhythm Lab project and paired Manchester based artists with four artists from around the world, challenging them to explore virtual methods of collaborating and creating music.

Behind The Scenes of Remote Rhythm Lab With Berry Blacc & Angel Bat Dawid

Music production as we knew it had been reshaped by the pandemic. We saw this as an opportunity to embrace technology and connect artists, exploring other means of music production that were in effect less costly and more sustainably driven.

Listen to the four track album that was released on Bandcamp with our sister label Rhythm Lab Records down below to hear what they composed. All profits were donated to the NAACP Legal Defence Fund in support of the BLM movement.

This time around, each young person will be paired with an artist from Manchester to collaborate on a brand new piece of music, to be released later in the year alongside short documentaries on Rhythm Lab Records. All artists will be announced via one off radio shows, broadcast on Earth Day 2022 on the 22nd of April.

More to follow on this exciting new collaboration. Watch this space, we can’t wait to get started…

International Women’s Day: From Women’s Safety to Iconic Guitar Based Music

International Women’s Day is dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements whilst also taking action for equality and calling out harmful biases. Amplifying and spotlighting is at the very forefront of this day.

For this International Women’s Day we held a roundtable discussion focusing on the topic of Women’s Safety. We invited cis, trans women and non-binary people to share their experiences on topics such as domestic violence, street safety, language that contributes to violence against women and what we can do to improve women’s safety. This roundtable was made possible by Heritage Fund.

Hosted by Jenna G, the discussion featured multiple guest speakers who shared their experiences or delved into performances inspired by the roundtable topic. London based International Slam Champion Y.A, and our very own Artist in Resident Melissa Dean delivered their original spoken word material, exploring themes such as trauma, depression and finding self-love. Also expect an appearance from founders of SLEEC, a survivor-run organisation that changes systems, supports survivors and dismantles the roots of male violence.

Listen to the full show below.

Aside from this discussion, we have so many amazing shows by our residents and special guests contributing to this momentous day. First up we invited Nu-R&B Neo Soul artist Mali Hayes for a one hour takeover. Since making their debut back in 2016, Mali Hayes has snatched recognition as one of Clash Magazines Artists Set To Rise, and is set to support the Ego Ella May this March at Manchester’s YES. Live on Reform airwaves from 2PM.

Mali Hayes

Next up we have Sunday Night W/ Dani & Lauren, diving into guitar based music made by the queens of Punk, Blues, Soul and Rock from the 1950’s up until present day.

Finally we have the queen of dance DJ Paulette inviting Raw Silk for their monthly show. The Raw Silk duo have been hosting events, radio shows and DJing together since they met one sweet summer in Melbourne. Grace and Steph have provided the vibes and tunes to many dance floors both internationally and locally. Glastonbury Festival, AVA, you name it.

Tune in this Saturday 12th March from 7PM-9PM to catch this exclusive guest mix.

BANDCAMP FRIDAY

We’re back with another instalment of Bandcamp Friday, this time running our residents have been cooking up a storm of different sounds which are now available to purchase.

Bandcamp Friday was initiated in March 2020, when Bandcamp waived their revenue share in order to help artists and labels impacted by the pandemic. The initiative is still ongoing and for this month’s Bandcamp Friday we would like to shout about the releases from our residents.

From grunge to the delicacy of melodic notes, to choppy breaks and vocals galore, this Friday’s edition does not disappoint.

Fingathing

Where you at?

Check out this collection of unreleased material from Fingathing, previously only heard when they play out. The four track EP alludes to their ‘mutant palette’ and unique sound. Made up of band members Peter Parker who is a resident on Battlestar Mancunia – and Sneaky. This bass heavy duo are set to make you start moving, if not grooving.

Loz Goddard

Balloon Tree Road

It’s official, Ballon Tree Road is now available for purchase. Last month we had a sneak peak of ‘Orange Blue Green’ and ‘When Time Slows It Feels Weird’ from the LP, which brought melodic delight to the eardrums to say the least.

Goddard’s ability to bend and merge diverse genres together, whilst maintaining a consistent level of outstanding production shines bright throughout this LP. One to whack on to get you in the feels, be sure to listen now.

DaiSu

FBN010

Catch one of Not Bad For A Girl’s residents Daisu on this VA, released on March 4th by Fly By Night Recordings, a record label from Birmingham.

DJ and producer DaiSu made her debut in the Manchester music scene in 2018. She has featured on stations such as Project Radio, 1020 Radio and Threads, as well as playing for the likes of Keep Hush, Loose Lips and No bounds.

All the profits this will be donated to both Sister Supporter, a UK charity that is a pro-choice and anti-harassment organisation, and a charity to help Ukraine (to be decided).

Ad Hoc Records

Ripples by Hemanito

Ad Hoc Records have a new release going live today. The track is called Ripples and is produced by the UK DJ and Producer Hermanito, which means little brother in Spanish.

Getting us in the seasonal mindset, this spring tune is a wonderfully peaceful electronic composition of vocal samples and instrumental flare. Brightening up our day with their chilled beats, we think this tune would be perfect for a brisk walk in the sun or to get those pre-summer BBQ vibes flowing.
